The Toronto African Film & Music Festival will be coming soon!
Please stay tuned for our up and coming press conference for the 2013 season!!
Thanks to the following sponsors this year:
Festival postponed because of ongoing Federal Workers Strike.
The date for the Toronto African Film & Music Festival that was slated for August 30 – September 1, is postponed, and new dates will be announced shortly.
Paris Roger the Executive Director said “The main reason we had to pull out this time was because of a strike with federal Government employees working in the Foreign Service that issues travel visa’s to Canada. As stated on their website.
“The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) union is currently taking strike action. PAFSO union members responsible for processing visa applications have been walking out of offices in Canada and overseas without advance notice.”
“We have 2 big acts coming to play to a crowd of over 3,000 people, the revenue generated for this covers more than 75% of the income needed to cover TAFMF’s budget. Since we have yet to get these visa’s, we have to postpone otherwise we would take a very large financial loss of more than $30,000. Also buying airfare for the people coming, well the seats are just sold out coming into Canada for the dates and places required. I simply do not have a choice.”
So it has been decided to push back the dates, until the visa’s can be issued for the performers that we had wanted to book for August 30 – September 1 2013.
“This was a hard decision to make, but the powers that be, made this impossible to move forward.”
“Once I can get the travel stuff done by the federal government, I can move ahead and book in the next couple of months.”
I hope the Federal government understands that our festival would generate over $150,000 into the local economy, this affects part time jobs, vendors, local musical groups, hotels, transit, and so on. My festival might not be as big as TIFF or some of the others, but I consider this an act against small business and our livelihood. I can only imagine how this is affecting big business."
I Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
